The CIoJ remains concerned about the trials and sentencing of Belarus journalist Roman Protasevich and his friend Sofia Sapega following their abduction from a diverted Ryanair flight 23rd May 2021 which is now 757 days ago. Sofia should be released immediately from her 6 year jail sentence. Despite the mixed signals over Roman’s position in Belarus before and after his pardon, he should be allowed to leave the country of his own free will. The CIoJ calls on all governments and states unjustly detaining journalists for doing their professional work to respect freedom of expression, the right to liberty and free them immediately. See: https://rsf.org/en/new-record-number-journalists-jailed-worldwide
