Review of UK and world papers and coverage of UK and global journalism stories for Journalism History for Wednesday 27th September 2023

Journalism is the first draft of history and these daily reports seek to provide an online briefing of the history of journalism for each day featured.

The Chartered Institute of Journalists remembers all the professional journalists and media workers murdered and killed while doing their work this year in all parts of the world and remember the immense sacrifice of those who gave their lives to the profession in the past. We send our condolences to their families, friends and professional colleagues.

The Chartered Institute of Journalists calls on China to release Australian broadcaster Cheng Lei from detention which now stands at 1,140 days since 13th August 2020 See: See: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-china-65530105. The CIoJ calls on Russia to immediately release Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich. His detention is wholly unjustifiable and political state hostage-taking. He has been deprived of his liberty for 182 days since 29th March 2023 #FreeEvan

The CIoJ remains concerned about the trials and sentencing of Belarus journalist Roman Protasevich and his friend Sofia Sapega following their abduction from a diverted Ryanair flight 23rd May 2021 which is now 857 days ago. Sofia should be released immediately from her 6 year jail sentence. Despite the mixed signals over Roman’s position in Belarus before and after his pardon, he should be allowed to leave the country of his own free will.
