Foreign Bodies. Series 1. Episode 1. Belgium – Hercule Poirot and Jules Maigret. Tuesday, 30 Apr 2019, 02:15 15 mins. BBC Radio 4 Extra
Synopsis: ‘Mark Lawson looks at modern European history through the device of crime fiction. In the first programme, he’s assisted in his inquiries by Jules Maigret and Hercule Poirot as he probes Belgium’s unexpected prominence in the history of detective fiction. Poirot was created by an English woman and Maigret, a French detective, created by a Belgian Georges Simenon. With Val McDermid, Lord Grey Gowrie, Andrea Camilleri and David Suchet. Crime fiction reflects society’s tensions. Helped by famous literary detectives, Mark shows how crimes reflect Europe’s times from the 20th-century world wars to the Eurozone crisis and nationalist tensions of the 21st. In crime fiction, everyday details become crucial clues: the way people dress and speak, the cars they drive, the jobs they have, the meals they eat. And the motivations of the criminals often turn on guilty secrets: how wealth was created, who slept with whom, what somebody did in the war.’

Article by Charles Norton for BBC CD sleeve ‘Focus on Maigret‘
‘French police detective Jules Maigret was created by novelist Georges Simenon in 1929. By the early 1970s Simenon had written over 100 stories featuring the investigator. Although originally published in the French language, the books were widely translated overseas.
The Maigret character became a British favourite in the early 1960s. Starring Welsh actor Rupert Davies, a BBC Maigret television series ran for 53 episodes (although Davies had not been in the pilot episode) between 1959 and 1963 (with a final special in 1969). It popularised the detective to great acclaim and became a UK television staple. However, it was not the BBC’s only brush with the character.
The BBC’s first Maigret radio dama had been 1957’s one-off play Maigret and the Lost Life, adapted by dramatist Giles Cooper. When the final TV episode was broadcast in 1969. Maigret was looked at again by BBC radio. However, the resultant Deux Enquetes du Commissaire Maigret on BBC Radio 3 (1969-70) was mainly an educational programme for French language students.
It wasn’t until 1976 that a full series of Maigret radio dramas was put into full production by the BBC, with a six-part run for BBC Radio 4. The series was produced by long-time BBC staffer Glyn Dearman. A former radio actor whose acting credits included Paul Temple and The Slide, Dearman moved from acting to production on the radio soap opera Mrs Dale’s Diary (AKA The Dales) on which he’d started as a member of the cast in the 1950s, before becoming the show’s co-producer in the 1960s. When that series came to an end in 1969. Dearman moved onto producing more standalone radio dramas, including the early RD Wingfield plays Compensating Error and The Tenth Anniversary. By 1976 he was among the busiest producers in the radio drama department and had just concluded work on a production of Angela Carter’s Vampirella for Radio 3, when he was assigned to the new Maigret.
With Rupert Davies in the advanced stages of terminal cancer, Dearman cast in the lead role radio veteran Maurice Denham, with whom he had worked before. A few years older then Ruper Davies, Denham would play a softer Maigret than television viewers were used to – still grumpy, but gentler than his predecessor had been.
The radio series (and virtually all future radio Maigrets) introduced the unusual device of having each episode begin with a conversation between the real-life Simenon (played by Michael Gough) and the fictional Maigret. The distancing effect of this framing narrative was designed to create a dynamic similar to that of Sherlock Holmes and his chronicler Doctor Watson. The concept was introduced by Federick Bradnum, the writer charged with dramatising Simenon’s short stories into radio scripts.
The six-part run of adaptations was broadcast on Radio 4 between August and September 1976. Altough not replicating the storming success of the television series, it was deemed sufficiently well-received for the programme to be renewed for another run the following year, with a further 13-part radio seris (again featuring Denham and Gough) running between May and August 1977.’

Jean Gabin Maigret films 1958 and 1959

The first major Maigret film released onto the international market starred Jean Gabin as the famous Parisian police inspector. Maigret Sets A Trap dramatised the novel where a butcher of women stalks the dark alleyways of Paris and it is up to the dogged detective to ensnare the madman before more women are killed. Directed by Jean Delonney in black and white film this title has been available on DVD for sometime.

The second Jean Gabin and Jean Delannoy Maigret collaboration was the 1959 film Maigret and the St. Fiacre Case dramatising the novel where Maigret returns to his countryside hometown to investigate an ominous letter threatening something dreadful in terms of a crime is about to take place. The Countess of St Fiacre dies from a heart attack when reading a false report of her son’s death in her prayer book during mass.

Les enquêtes du commissaire Maigret- French television series with Jean Richard in the role of Maigret between 1967 and 1990.

This series has not been broadcast on UK television and there are no DVDs with English subtitles. It is possible to acquire DVD discs and coffrets in France, though some can be expensive because of their rarity.
Up to the present time Richard performed in the longest television drama series featuring Maigret- a total of 88 episodes over 23 years.
French Wikipedia states: ‘He ended up finding fame by playing for more than twenty years, from October 1967, Commissioner Maigret on television, under the direction of Claude Barma, René Lucot, Marcel Cravenne, Denys de La Patellière among others in 88 episodes including eighteen in black and white. His naturally gruff and slow side, his confident gait, and the fact that he has smoked a pipe for a long time, undoubtedly allowed him to land this role, despite the very large number of candidates in the running. Georges Simenon then gives his advice to his interpreter who very quickly establishes himself in the role. The series ended after the broadcast of the 88th and final episode in June 1990.’
Richard died in 2001 at the age of 80. However, he was not Georges Simenon’s favourite actor performing the role.
Richard was born 18th April 1921, in the western town of Bessines and began his working life as a caricaturist before turning to comedy and then acting.
He created the Jean Richard Circus in 1957 and the La Mer de Sable theme park, northeast of Paris, in 1963 – both of which were still owned by his family at the time of his death.
The then President of France, Jacques Chirac, paid tribute saying: ‘Everybody knew and liked Jean Richard. A showbiz personality, he brought his witty eloquence and affability to many comedy films and plays. As a circus man, he knew how to share his passion with the greatest number of people.
He added that he would be remembered as ‘the man with the pipe… such was the talented way he played the role of the fictional detective Inspector Maigret.’

MAIGRET – Official HD Trailer (2022) – A film by Patrice Leconte
Promotional copy:-
The legendary Gerard Depardieu brings to remarkable life one of the most beloved characters from 20th century crime fiction in MAIGRET, the masterfully-directed and hugely entertaining new film from multi award-winning writer/director Patrice Leconte (‘Monsieur Hire’, ‘Ridicule’, ‘The Girl On The Bridge’), based on Georges Simenon’s internationally best-selling novels.
Paris, 1953. The body of a beautiful young woman is discovered at Place Ventimille, dressed in an elegant evening gown. There is nothing to identify her, and no witnesses. Pensive and world-weary Inspector Jules Maigret (Depardieu) endeavours to piece together her story, and in doing so uncovers details about her past and character. In his enquiries, he encounters Betty (Jade Labeste), a woman who bears an uncanny resemblance to the victim, but who also reminds him of one even closer to his own life…
Simenon (and Leconte’s) formidable protagonist – a French counterpart to Agatha Christie’s Poirot and P.D. James’ Dalgiesh – has been brought to the screen before, but Depardieu leaves an indelible stamp on the character, bringing tenderness and dignity to a man prepared to listen before he speaks, and to stand up for those without a voice.
