Review of UK national newspapers for Thursday 4th December 2025.
A press dominated by NHS failings, economic anxiety, national security fears and political confrontation, softened at the edges by royal pageantry, celebrity culture and festive distraction.
AT-A-GLANCE
- NHS under acute scrutiny: asbestos exposure, bullying culture and financial instability dominate broadsheets and devolved titles
- Keir Starmer under sustained attack from right-leaning papers over business rates, policing, and state intervention
- Russia and security threats feature strongly, from spies entering Britain to NATO warnings and cyber fears
- Devolved nations focus on health funding, depopulation, and governance tensions with Westminster
- Tabloids split sharply between outrage (crime, abuse, paedophilia) and escapism (royals, football, celebrity romance)
FULL PRESS REVIEW
Health and the NHS sit unmistakably at the heart of Thursday’s news agenda.
The Guardian leads with what it calls a damning account of a “bullying culture” at a scandal-hit NHS hospital, arguing that patient safety was compromised by systemic failures in leadership and workplace behaviour. This theme is echoed forcefully by The Independent, whose investigation alleges thousands of NHS laboratory staff have been exposed to dangerous levels of formaldehyde, described starkly as “the new asbestos.”
In Scotland, the Scotsman warns that despite an additional £3bn in funding, the Scottish NHS remains “financially unsustainable”, while The Herald adds that watchdogs fear the service is now on an unstable footing, intensifying pressure on Holyrood ministers.
Turning to politics and the economy, the Daily Express mounts a robust attack on the Prime Minister, accusing Sir Keir Starmer of a “mission to crush our high streets” through business rate rises. The Daily Mail reinforces this critical tone, while also leaning heavily into royal and celebrity narratives elsewhere on its page.
The Daily Telegraph blends governance and surveillance concerns, revealing proposals for face recognition technology in every town, raising questions about privacy versus security. Alongside this, it features the Prince and Princess of Wales prominently at a state banquet, symbolising continuity and national dignity amid political friction.
Security and foreign affairs loom large.
The i leads with claims that Russian spies are secretly entering Britain via cargo ships, framing the issue as a new “grey-zone” security threat. The Financial Times broadens the geopolitical scope, warning of instability in US monetary leadership and cautioning that markets remain vulnerable to political decisions across the Atlantic.
The Independent meanwhile highlights NATO warnings that Vladimir Putin will “feel it” should Russia escalate attacks on Western allies.
Among the tabloids, outrage dominates.
The Daily Mirror splashes on disturbing images linked to Jeffrey Epstein’s island, reigniting the association with Prince Andrew. The Scottish Daily Record uses uncompromising language in condemning a convicted abuser, while the Sun and Star pivot decisively toward celebration, football and celebrity — highlighting pub cheer, festive drinking and high-profile royal appearances.
Regionally, devolution and local pressure points take centre stage.
The Western Mail reports claims that Westminster is “rolling back devolution”, while the South Wales Echo leads on major infrastructure redevelopment in Cardiff. In Northern Ireland, the Belfast Telegraph focuses on drugs, policing and the human toll of addiction, while the Irish News calls for a “radical overhaul” of crisis-hit GP services.

See: https://rsf.org/en/country/belarus RSF states: ‘To silence independent journalists, the authorities have resorted to state-sponsored terrorism, including censorship, violence, mass arrests, and coordinated raids on homes and media offices, as well as disbanding the Association of Belarusian Journalists (BAJ).’
The CIoJ calls on all governments and states unjustly detaining journalists for doing their professional work to respect freedom of expression, the right to liberty and free them immediately. See: https://rsf.org/en/new-record-number-journalists-jailed-worldwide
