Review of UK national newspapers for Sunday 1st March 2026
Good morning. Here is a round-up of ten of today’s UK national newspaper front pages.
Most of the papers lead on dramatic developments in the Middle East, with reports that Iran’s Supreme Leader has been killed following US and Israeli airstrikes.
The Sunday Times headline reads: “Ayatollah killed in blitz from America and Israel.” The paper quotes President Trump as saying “one of most evil men in history is dead” and reports that he urged the Iranian people to “take back their country.” It also carries the line: “Row as PM fails to let US forces use British airbases.”
Similarly, The Sunday Telegraph declares: “Khamenei dead in rubble.” It describes “massive attacks on Islamic Republic by US and Israel in push for regime change” and reports that Iran has retaliated against Israel and Gulf states.
The Observer opts for the headline: “Attack on the Ayatollah.” It reports that the Supreme Leader’s body has been found, according to Israeli sources, and highlights what it calls a widening transatlantic divide, saying the UK and parts of Europe have withheld support for the US action.
The Independent leads with: “Tehran strikes back across Middle East as Trump bombs Iran.” It says British jets joined “defensive operations” but were not involved in the attack itself, and reports global disruption as airports and shipping routes were affected.
Several tabloids use more dramatic language.
The Sun on Sunday front page reads: “WAR ON IRAN” and in large type: “AYATOLLAH DEAD.” It reports that Tehran was “blitzed” and that the Iranian President confirmed the Supreme Leader had been killed.
The Mail on Sunday says: “British tourists blitzed and Iran’s leader ‘dead’ as Middle East erupts.” Alongside its international coverage, it also carries a domestic political splash: “FOREIGN-BORN VOTERS STOLE BY-ELECTION BLASTS FARAGE,” reporting claims from the Reform UK leader about alleged irregularities.
The Sunday Mirror headline reads: “U.S. AND ISRAEL ATTACK IRAN” with the stark banner: “MIDDLE EAST IN FLAMES.” It reports at least 200 people killed and says Brits have been told to find shelter as retaliation strikes rock the region.
The Sunday Express similarly declares: “WAR ERUPTS ACROSS MIDDLE EAST.” It describes “devastation as America strikes and Iran retaliates,” and reports that the UK did not take part in the offensive operation.
The Sunday People focuses on the impact on British nationals abroad with the headline: “GET TO SHELTER.” It says Brits in Dubai and across the Middle East have been told to take cover “on brink of all-out war.”
And the Daily Star Sunday leads with: “BRITS DUBAI MISSILE TERROR.” It reports that blasts rocked a tourist hotspot as Iran struck back at the US blitz, describing the region as being “on brink of war.”
Taken together, today’s front pages are dominated by the escalation between the United States, Israel and Iran — with broadsheets focusing on geopolitical implications and diplomatic divisions, while the tabloids highlight the immediate danger to British nationals and the risk of a wider regional conflict.
Review of front pages of UK’s regional England, and nation Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland newspapers
Good morning. Here is a further look at the front pages across England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland.
We begin in Scotland, where Scotland on Sunday leads with the escalating crisis in the Middle East. Its headline reads: “Trump: Khamenei killed in air strike”, reporting that the Ayatollah’s compound was struck, with fears of further retaliation. The paper says the US president has urged Iranians to “take over” their country.
Also focusing on the conflict, The Sunday Post carries the stark line: “Middle East at war in US-Iran conflict”, describing a “major attack” and the region being plunged into war. Alongside that, it features a domestic investigation under the headline: “Scottish firm given £54m of PPE cash via VIP lane fails to pay tax on profits.”
The Sunday Mail in Scotland declares “CRISIS IN THE MIDDLE EAST” with the bold headline “FIRE AND FURY”, adding: “America and Israel launch missiles at Iran as experts warn that war is illegal.”
Meanwhile, The National leads on domestic politics with a large exclusive: “‘I WAS VICTIM OF SPYING SCANDAL BUT PROBE HAS IGNORED ME’”, though it also notes: “Israel claims Iran’s leader killed in joint strikes with US.”
In England, the Manchester Evening News on Sunday turns away from geopolitics and instead celebrates the music industry, splashing with “Greatest BRITs”, calling it a “sensational show for top music awards.”
In Wales, Wales on Sunday leads with a human interest story: “A MUM’S FIGHT FOR ANSWERS”, focusing on a family’s search for what happened to a student who vanished two years ago. The paper also highlights sport and transport, noting rail fares frozen for a year.
Turning to Northern Ireland, Sunday Life opts for a dramatic crime headline: “KILLER IN THE HOTEL CORRIDORS”, detailing a case involving violent offenders linked to a four-star venue. It also carries the line “Escorts shame of PSNI inspector.”
In Ireland, the Sunday Independent leads with the regional impact of the Middle East crisis under the headline: “Chaos spreads in Middle East as Iran retaliates to US strikes.” It notes that flights have been cancelled and Irish citizens are stranded.
The Sunday World focuses on a high-profile criminal case with the headline: “‘BURYING DANIEL WAS STUPID MISTAKE’”, reporting that the mother of Daniel Arueboe has spoken publicly for the first time.
Across the front pages, the dominant theme is the intensifying conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran, with varying emphasis — from military developments and legal questions to the impact on citizens abroad. Alongside that, domestic investigations, crime stories, and cultural events compete for attention.
That’s a snapshot of today’s front pages across the UK and Ireland.
