Review of UK national newspapers for Saturday 7th March 2026

Many of Saturday’s newspapers focus on the escalating conflict involving Iran and the United States, and the wider political and economic consequences of the crisis.

The Financial Times Weekend leads with the headline “Qatar warns Gulf will be forced to halt exports of oil and gas in days.” The paper says energy markets are reacting nervously to the conflict, with crude prices rising sharply and analysts warning of possible global economic repercussions if supplies through the Gulf are disrupted.

The war itself dominates several front pages. The Guardian reports “Trump demands Iran’s unconditional surrender.” The paper says the US and Israel have launched some of the heaviest bombardments so far, forcing large numbers of people to flee parts of Lebanon and raising fears of a wider regional war.

A similar theme appears in The Times, which leads with “Surrender, warns Trump.” The paper says the US president is calling on Iran to give in “unconditionally”, while also reporting that the UK could legally strike Iranian missile sites if British interests are threatened.

The Daily Telegraph goes further, with the headline “Putin helps Iran attack the US.” The paper reports claims that Russia may be providing intelligence or assistance linked to Iranian operations, suggesting the conflict could have broader geopolitical implications.

The i Weekend focuses on public opinion in Britain, carrying the headline “UK voters say no to joining war with Iran.” The paper says polling suggests most people oppose Britain becoming directly involved in air strikes against Iran.

Security concerns closer to home are highlighted by the Daily Mail, which runs the headline “Terror fears over ‘Iranian London spy cell’.” The paper reports that four men have been arrested on suspicion of spying on Jewish community sites and other targets in the capital.

The Daily Express takes a different approach, leading with “Camilla’s plea for children to ‘get away from phones’.” The paper says the Queen is urging young people to spend more time reading books rather than using smartphones.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mirror focuses on US domestic politics, with the headline “Trump assault claims probed by FBI.” The paper reports allegations contained in newly released Epstein files and says investigators are examining claims that the former president has denied.

Entertainment news leads The Sun, whose front page reads “Oasis split!” — clarifying “Not the band… Noel & girlfriend Sally broke up.” The paper says the Oasis guitarist has separated from his partner after two years together.

The Star runs the front page story ‘UK Entry Is Gut…Ja? Eurovision easy as Eins, Zwei, Drei.‘ The standfirst in the middle of the front page picture explains: ‘We’re going to gewinnen Europvision with a UK entry called Eins, Zwi, Drei. Well at least Germans know how to win stuff.’

And finally, returning to the international story dominating the news agenda, several papers note the growing diplomatic and military tension surrounding Iran, underlining how the crisis is shaping both global politics and domestic debate in Britain.

In summary, the Saturday front pages are heavily dominated by the escalating conflict involving Iran and the United States — from military developments and diplomatic tensions to the potential economic impact and the question of whether Britain should become involved. Alongside that, the papers carry a mix of domestic political stories, royal commentary and celebrity news.

Review of front pages of UK’s regional England, and nation Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland newspapers

A range of domestic political issues, crime stories and the international situation involving Iran feature prominently across the front pages of newspapers from around the UK and Ireland today.

In Scotland, The Scotsman reports concerns about public services with the headline “Scots services ‘significantly worse than before Covid’.” The paper cites analysis suggesting schools and hospitals north of the border are performing worse than before the pandemic, while also warning that budget pressures could continue to affect services.

Also in Scotland, The Herald focuses on utilities and consumer bills. Its lead story reads “Union demands seat on water utility board.” The paper says trade unions are calling for representation on the board of Scottish Water amid criticism over executive pay and rising household costs.

The Daily Record, meanwhile, leads with a criminal justice story under the headline “Limbs in the loch parole panic.” The paper says a victim of a high-profile murder case fears they will not be warned if the killer is released on parole.

Moving to England, the Yorkshire Post highlights Britain’s possible military role in the Middle East, reporting “RAF ‘could strike Iran missile sites’.” The paper says British jets could legally target Iranian bases if an attack were considered imminent, according to comments from ministers.

In the North West, the Manchester Evening News focuses on a criminal case with the headline “Drug dealer aimed loaded gun at cop.” The paper reports that a man has been jailed after an officer said he feared he would not survive the confrontation.

In Wales, the Western Mail reports on the political landscape with “Reform and Plaid neck and neck – poll.” The paper says a new survey suggests the two parties are closely matched in Welsh political support.

Another Welsh title, the South Wales Echo, leads on a violent assault case with the headline “Chef bit off part of friend’s ear in row.” The paper says a man has been jailed after the attack left the victim seriously injured.

In Northern Ireland, the Belfast Telegraph reports on a murder trial, with the headline “Man accused of Natalie’s murder beat ex-partner, court is told.” The paper says a jury heard claims of previous violence involving the defendant.

The Irish News focuses on the environmental future of Lough Neagh, leading with “‘I’ll give Lough Neagh away for free… if our politicians can agree’.” The paper reports comments from the Earl of Shaftesbury about transferring ownership of the lough in an effort to address environmental concerns.

And in the Republic of Ireland, the Irish Independent highlights the potential economic effects of the Middle East conflict with “Trump’s war to spark mortgage hikes and push petrol over €2.” The paper says rising energy prices linked to the crisis could drive inflation and higher borrowing costs.

Back in England the ‘far left’ Morning Star‘s front page continues with the political focus on Middle East war with the headlines: ‘Emergeny rallies at US embassy and RAF Firford- Marchers tell PM: Work for Peace Not War.’

In summary, the front pages across the UK and Ireland reflect a wide range of stories today — from public services and domestic politics to crime and justice — while the wider geopolitical situation in the Middle East continues to shape economic concerns and defence debates across several of the papers.
