Review of UK national newspapers for Saturday 14th March 2026
UK National Newspaper Front Page Review
Saturday 14 March
Several of today’s newspapers lead on rising tensions in the Middle East and their impact on energy prices, while others focus on political controversy surrounding newly surfaced photographs linked to the Jeffrey Epstein case.
The Financial Times Weekend leads with concerns in global markets, reporting “Wall St fears ever rising oil price.” The paper says crude prices have climbed above $100 a barrel amid fears the conflict involving Iran could disrupt shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for global energy supplies.
The Times also focuses on the economic impact of the conflict. Its headline reads “Reeves promises help as war pushes up energy bills.” The paper says the chancellor is preparing targeted support for households as global instability drives up the cost of gas and electricity.
Several papers highlight a diplomatic rift between Western allies over sanctions on Russia. The Guardian reports “Europe rebukes US for easing Russia oil ban.” According to the paper, European governments fear loosening restrictions could undermine efforts to pressure Moscow over the war in Ukraine.
A similar theme appears on the front page of The Independent, which says “Britain warns Trump: lifting Putin sanctions aids his war machine.” The paper reports concerns in Westminster that any relaxation of sanctions could strengthen Russia financially.
Meanwhile, the Daily Telegraph leads on the military dimension of the crisis with the headline “Trump to take Strait by force.” The paper says the US president is considering deploying troops to secure the Strait of Hormuz as attacks on shipping escalate.
Turning to domestic politics, several papers prominently feature newly surfaced images linked to Jeffrey Epstein.
The Daily Mail carries the headline “Starmer’s dereliction of duty,” alongside a photograph reportedly showing Prince Andrew, Jeffrey Epstein and Peter Mandelson together. The paper says the prime minister has admitted he did not personally question Mandelson before appointing him US ambassador.
The Daily Mirror also focuses on the image, with the front page headline “Epstein files bombshell: Andy, Mandy & the paedophile.”
The Daily Telegraph similarly references the photograph in its coverage, describing it as “The Prince, the paedophile and ‘Petey’.”
The Independent reports on the same development with the headline “Bathrobed Andrew and Mandelson pictured together for first time with paedophile Epstein.”
Elsewhere, the Daily Express focuses on energy policy, urging the government to expand domestic production with the headline “Get drilling to stop soaring bills.”
The Star‘s front page splashes the photograph of Epstein with Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and Peter Mandelson in bathrobes with the headlines: “Three Amugos- Andy and Mandy with Epstein” and have circled three mugs bearing US map logos positioned on the table they are around.
And the Sun leads on a showbusiness story involving a former reality television contestant, with the headline “Apprentice star Kieran: I blew £500 a week on cocaine.”
That’s a summary of the front pages of the UK’s national newspapers for Saturday 14 March.
Review of front pages of UK’s regional England, and nation Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland newspapers
Regional & Nations Newspaper Review
Saturday 14 March
Several of the regional newspapers lead on politics, crime and public spending, while others focus on community stories and sport across the nations of the UK.
In Scotland, The Scotsman reports divisions within the medical profession over proposed legislation, with the headline “Top medical bodies oppose bill to legalise assisted dying.” The paper says psychiatrists and pharmacists are among those raising concerns about safeguards in the proposed law.
Also in Scotland, The Herald leads with allegations of misconduct within the Scottish Parliament. Its headline reads “Police called in over Holyrood misconduct.” The paper reports that officers are examining claims of bullying and sexual misconduct following an internal review of parliamentary workplace culture.
Meanwhile The Daily Record focuses on a dramatic fire in Glasgow, praising the efforts of emergency crews under the headline “The hero of Union Street.” The paper features a firefighter who helped battle the blaze that severely damaged part of the city centre.
Another Scottish title, The National, highlights housing policy ahead of political campaigning with the headline “SNP pledge £10K for first-time home-buyers.” The paper says the proposal would provide financial support for people trying to enter the property market.
Turning to England, The Yorkshire Post reports on changes to aviation forecasts with the headline “Airport passenger forecast halved.” The paper says revised projections have significantly reduced expectations for passenger numbers at Doncaster Sheffield Airport, though officials remain hopeful about reopening the facility.
In Manchester, the Manchester Evening News leads with a dramatic incident at a school. Its headline reads “Bomb squad scrambled to school.” The paper reports that emergency services were called after what was described as a “Second World War-like explosive device” was brought in during a classroom show-and-tell session.
In Birmingham, Thursday’s Birmingham Post runs the headline: “Tomorrow’s World” with a simulation of the future with the standfirst bullet points: ‘CIty vision brough to life in “stirring film to woo investment; Brum’s “central heart” could see 8,000 new jobs and 5,000 more homes; New boulevard and public square bordered by offices and shops.’
In Wales, the Western Mail focuses on a criminal case with the headline “Life for jealous man who buried his wife.” The paper reports that a man has been sentenced to life imprisonment after concealing his wife’s body in a garden following her murder.
Also in Wales, the South Wales Echo warns about online scams with the headline “Victims of the Tinder fraudster.” The paper says a man allegedly used dating apps to target women in a series of fraudulent schemes.
In Northern Ireland, the Belfast Telegraph highlights government spending with the headline “£136k in a year spent on sending Stormont ministers across globe.” The paper reports that travel costs for ministers have drawn scrutiny amid wider political debate about public finances.
Thursday’s The Impartial Reporter front page story is: “‘She lit up our little town…Community in mourning after the shocking death of Fermanagh woman.
And The Irish News leads with infrastructure concerns and environmental policy, reporting “Stormont climate change targets thwart another transport project.” The paper says legal and policy issues linked to climate targets have delayed a major road scheme.
The Irish Daily Mail‘s front page headline is: “We’re not ready for drone attqack, majority believe. Only one in 12 thinks security is tight enough for EU presidency.”
That’s a look at the front pages of regional and national newspapers across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland for Saturday 14 March.
