Review of UK national newspapers for Friday 15th May 2026
Most of Friday’s papers continue to focus on the escalating Labour leadership crisis, with Andy Burnham now emerging as a central figure after Wes Streeting’s resignation and the growing pressure on Sir Keir Starmer.
The Guardian leads with: “Burnham bids to topple Starmer, but he must win byelection first”. The paper reports that the Greater Manchester mayor now has “a potential route back to parliament” after a Labour MP agreed to stand aside. It also notes that Wes Streeting quit the cabinet but stopped short of formally launching a leadership challenge.
The Times headline is: “Burnham makes move”, describing how a Labour MP is to stand down so the mayor can contest a Westminster seat. The paper says Streeting resigned with a “withering attack on Starmer”, intensifying speculation about the prime minister’s future.
Similarly, The Daily Telegraph declares: “Burnham launches bid for No10”. It says the Manchester mayor has been “handed a route back to Westminster” and reports that Nigel Farage has pledged to “throw everything” at the forthcoming by-election contest.
The Independent also centres on Labour’s turmoil with: “Burnham makes his move to take on PM after Streeting quits”. The paper says Angela Rayner is also expected to enter the leadership race after reportedly being “cleared” by HMRC over a tax inquiry.
The Financial Times takes a more measured tone with: “Starmer’s battle begins as Burnham handed route back to Westminster”. The FT says the resignation of Wes Streeting and the opening of a parliamentary seat have transformed what had been internal Labour tensions into an open leadership struggle.
The i newspaper headline reads: “Streeting and Burnham start leadership battle to force out Starmer”. It reports that Labour critics are now moving openly against the prime minister and says the contest could become a wider debate about the party’s direction.
Among the tabloids, the Daily Mirror carries the headline: “And so it begins…” under the banner “Labour Battleground”. The paper says Streeting, Burnham and Angela Rayner are all lining up to challenge the PM despite signs of economic improvement and falling NHS waiting lists.
The Daily Mail opts for: “Labour’s great pretenders”, alongside the banner “God help us all – Day 2”. The paper portrays the contest as a chaotic struggle for power within government ranks.
The Daily Express headline is: “Where we need vision, we have a vacuum”. It says Labour has been plunged into “civil war” following Streeting’s resignation and Burnham’s return to frontline politics.
The Daily Star’s front page headlines are: “King of the North Andy gets ‘seat’ to fight Keir- Crash and Burham.”
Meanwhile, The Sun leads with the punning headline: “Burn to run”. It reports that Andy Burnham is preparing a leadership bid while Sir Keir Starmer, though politically bruised, is refusing to block him from standing.
Several papers also continue coverage of Nigel Farage and questions surrounding a £5 million gift from a cryptocurrency businessman. The Guardian reports: “Farage paid £1.4m cash for home after £5m gift”, while the i says the Reform UK leader “bought £1.4 million property in cash after his £5 million gift from crypto tycoon”.
Away from Westminster, a number of papers carry international stories. The Financial Times reports that “Washington-Beijing ties depend on ‘Taiwan question’, Xi warns Trump”, while The Independent leads its top strap with “China’s President Xi tells Trump: We must be partners, not rivals”.
And finally, several lighter or cultural stories appear across the front pages. The Sun features Shakira and the return of Top Gear, while The Telegraph promotes a feature headlined “The Russian agent who escaped Putin in the belly of a cow”.
Review of front pages of UK’s regional England, and nation Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland newspapers
Many of the regional and national titles continue to focus on the political fallout surrounding Sir Keir Starmer, Wes Streeting and Andy Burnham, though several papers also lead on prominent local stories.
The Metro front page carries the single-word headline: “Rivals”. The paper describes “gripping drama” within Labour, saying Streeting has quit the cabinet while Angela Rayner says she is “clear” over tax matters and Andy Burnham launches his leadership bid.
In Wales, the Western Mail leads with: “Starmer ‘on the brink’ as Streeting resigns”. The paper says the prime minister insisted he was “truly sorry” at the resignation of his health secretary while trying to contain a widening leadership dispute.
The Manchester Evening News gives prominent backing to Andy Burnham’s move with the dramatic headline: “…Cometh the man”. The paper says Burnham “makes his move” as speculation intensifies over Labour’s future leadership.
Scotland’s papers also devote significant attention to the Westminster crisis. The Scotsman headline reads: “Burnham in line for seat as Starmer faces further threat”. The paper reports that a Labour MP may stand aside to allow Burnham to return to Parliament.
Similarly, The Herald says: “Starmer fights for survival as leadership battle looms”. It reports that Labour divisions are deepening after Wes Streeting’s resignation and Burnham’s apparent positioning for a leadership contest.
The Daily Record combines football and politics on its front page. Beneath the football headline “The hand that rocked the table”, the paper says: “That’s Andy”, reporting that Burnham, Streeting and Angela Rayner are all being lined up as potential challengers to the prime minister.
The National (The newspaper that supports an independent Scotland) presents the front page headline: “SNP meet with Sinn Fein and Plaid” explaining: “Nothern Ireland’s leader invites parties to discuss self-determination amid UK ‘chaos.'”
In Northern Ireland, the Belfast Telegraph headline is: “Anger after Irish signs get backing without the approval of residents”. The paper reports controversy over Irish-language street signage in Belfast, with critics claiming the process “makes a mockery of consultation”.
The Irish News leads on a major criminal case with: “Man guilty of attempt to kill PSNI officers”. The paper reports that a County Tyrone man has been convicted over a mortar bomb attack linked to dissident republican activity. The front page also features continuing questions surrounding the murder of Sean Brown, with the headline: “Priest says questions remain about police and MI5 silence on Sean Brown murder”.
In Yorkshire, The Yorkshire Post takes a different angle from many other titles, focusing on the impact of political instability on an ongoing maternity inquiry. Its headline reads: “Families fear for inquiry’s future”. The paper says bereaved parents are concerned the leadership turmoil in Westminster could jeopardise progress into the maternity scandal investigation.
Meanwhile, the South Wales Echo opts for a striking local story with the headline: “Furious pubgoer smashes bulldozer into bar”. The paper reports a £22,000 wrecking spree after comments were allegedly made about the end of the driver’s marriage.
The weekly Jewish Chronicle publishing for the UK’s Jewish community presents on its front page the story headlined: “Universities failing to protect pro-Israel students from hate.”
In London, The Morning Star (for peace and socialism) declares on its front page: “quitter Streeting turns up head on PM” explaining: “Leadership bid on hold but no let up foStarmer as MP resigns to make way for Burnham’s return.”
Several of the regional papers also feature sport prominently. The Scotsman highlights controversy in Scottish football with: “What a VAR-ce”, referring to disputed refereeing decisions affecting the Scottish Premiership title race. The Daily Record likewise focuses heavily on the dramatic Celtic-Hearts clash.
Elsewhere, Rory McIlroy appears prominently on the Belfast Telegraph, which says the golfer endured a “nightmare start to US PGA, but McIlroy smiling all the way to the bank with £325m fortune”.
And finally, a number of lighter and cultural stories appear across the papers, including Eurovision coverage in The Yorkshire Post and gardening promotions featured prominently in several regional titles.

The Institute calls on Belarus to release the journalists and media workers it has detained. Belarus is currently ranked 165th out of 180 countries in the World Press Freedom Index. See: https://rsf.org/en/country/belarus RSF states: ‘To silence independent journalists, the authorities have resorted to state-sponsored terrorism, including censorship, violence, mass arrests, and coordinated raids on homes and media offices, as well as disbanding the Association of Belarusian Journalists (BAJ) … between 500 and 600 journalists have been forced into exile, and most of those who have stayed back work clandestinely. Targeted by the police, they are arrested, searched, sometimes assaulted, and mistreated in prison.’
The CIoJ calls on all governments and states unjustly detaining journalists for doing their professional work to respect freedom of expression, the right to liberty and free them immediately. See: https://rsf.org/en/new-record-number-journalists-jailed-worldwide
