Review of UK national newspapers for Wednesday 20th May 2026
A number of Wednesday’s papers focus on the growing political debate around the cost of living, with several reporting on proposals to tackle rising food and energy prices.
The Daily Express leads with the headline: “ENERGY BILLS TO SOAR BY £200 IN ‘ANOTHER FAILED PROMISE’”. The paper says Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has accused Labour of failing to prevent further increases in household energy costs.
Economic intervention is also prominent elsewhere. The Financial Times reports: “Treasury asks supermarkets to cap prices on staple foods”, saying ministers are considering agreements with retailers to limit rises on essential items.
A similar theme appears in The Daily Telegraph, which carries the headline: “Reeves tells shops to cap food prices”. The paper describes opposition from parts of the retail sector, which it says fears a return to “1970s-style” price controls.
The The Times also reports on the issue under the headline: “Milk, egg and bread prices could be frozen”. Alongside that, the paper says: “Stand-firm Starmer may still be in Downing St in the new year”, suggesting Labour MPs remain divided over the political threat posed by Andy Burnham.
Indeed, the future of Labour and the role of Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham features prominently across several front pages.
The The i Paper reports: “Cabinet ministers woo Burnham in race for top jobs”, claiming senior figures are positioning themselves around a possible future Burnham leadership bid.
The Daily Mail takes a more confrontational approach with: “Burnham said that men who identify as women should be able to use female toilets”. The paper says it has obtained a leaked recording relating to comments about single-sex spaces.
Climate and public health lead the agenda in The Guardian, whose front page headline reads: “UK must get used to being a hot country, climate advisers warn”. The paper reports recommendations for adapting homes, schools and workplaces to rising temperatures. It also carries the story: “WHO hopes untested drugs can fight Ebola”, amid concern over outbreaks in Central Africa.
Several tabloids focus on entertainment and celebrity news. The Daily Mirror leads with: “KYLIE: MY SECRET CANCER BATTLE”, featuring singer Kylie Minogue discussing a second cancer diagnosis and fertility treatment.
Reality television dominates the front of The Sun, which declares: “MARRIED AT FIRST SIGHT AXED” following allegations connected to the programme. The paper says the series has been cancelled while police investigations continue.
The Daily Star run on their front page the story that “Boffs hatch birds from printed shell” with the witty headline: “What came first- chick or 3D egg?“
Crime allegations linked to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein make the front page of The Independent. Its headline reads: “Police investigate new child sex abuse claims linked to Epstein files”. The paper says detectives are examining historic allegations in Surrey and Berkshire.
Sport also receives widespread attention this morning, especially after Arsenal secured their first league title in 22 years following Manchester City’s draw. The achievement appears prominently on the front pages of several papers, including the Express, Mirror and Sun.
And finally, lighter stories appear across a number of titles, with the announcement of a new presenting line-up for Strictly Come Dancing featured heavily in the Telegraph, Mirror, Independent and Sun.
Review of front pages of UK’s regional England, and nation Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland newspapers
Several of the papers continue to focus on political tensions within Labour, alongside stories about public services, crime and local concerns.
In Wales, the Western Mail leads with the headline: “‘Keir should stand down’ – Drakeford”. The paper reports comments from former Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford, who says Sir Keir Starmer should resign if Labour performs poorly in future elections. The story also notes Drakeford’s support for Andy Burnham as a possible successor.
The South Wales Echo takes a more local angle with: “SHOP FINED £4K AFTER RATS GNAWED AT CUSTOMER’S BREAD”. The paper says inspectors discovered evidence of infestation after complaints from shoppers.
In Northern Ireland, healthcare disruption dominates the front page of The Irish News. Its headline reads: “Doctors are set to stage two days of walkouts”. The paper says hospitals are preparing for industrial action later this month amid an ongoing dispute over pay and conditions.
The Belfast Telegraph leads on a murder investigation with: “Man murdered in Belfast flat was ex-heroin dealer”. Alongside the story, the paper features photographs of King Charles and Queen Camilla during their visit to Northern Ireland under the headline: “Sip for a king”.
In Scotland, energy policy leads the front page of The Scotsman. The headline reads: “MPs accused of voting to ‘shut down North Sea’”. The paper says criticism has followed a parliamentary vote relating to oil and gas licensing.
Broadcasting and media jobs are the focus for The Herald, which reports: “More questions over BBC TV ‘Scottish’ programmes”. The paper says concerns have been raised about whether enough production work is genuinely based in Scotland rather than commissioned from London.
The Daily Record leads with a bullying case involving a young boy. Its headline says: “BULLIES CHOKE CODY 7 WITH ROPE”. The paper reports claims from the child’s family about repeated harassment at school.
The National (The newspaper that supports an independent Scotland): continues with its coverage of the interception of the convoy headed for Gaza: “‘Appalling’: Relatives of Scots kidnapped by Israel slam UK” explaining: “Foreign Office condemed over lack of action after flotilla volunteers taken captive.”
In England, transport infrastructure leads the front page of The Yorkshire Post. The headline reads: “Call to accelerate plan for trams”. The paper says civic leaders want faster progress on a proposed mass transit network linking Leeds and Bradford.
The Manchester Evening News reports on a criminal case with: “Wannabe rapper jailed over pal’s death”. The paper says a teenager has been sentenced to ten years in prison following a fatal incident involving a friend.
The left-wing Morning Star (for peace and socialism) headlines with: “No Work No Hours No Hope” explaining: “Unions hit out as Labour leaves a lost generation floundering for secure jobs.”
Meanwhile, the free newspaper Metro continues coverage of allegations linked to reality television programming. Its headline reads: “In hindsight, no wonder it went wrong” beneath the banner “Married At First Sight TV scandal”. The paper reports calls for greater oversight of reality television productions following allegations made by former participants.
Across many of the regional papers there is also continued coverage of football, with Arsenal’s Premier League title celebrations and preparations for Scotland’s World Cup campaign appearing prominently on several front pages.

The Institute calls on Belarus to release the journalists and media workers it has detained. Belarus is currently ranked 165th out of 180 countries in the World Press Freedom Index. See: https://rsf.org/en/country/belarus RSF states: ‘To silence independent journalists, the authorities have resorted to state-sponsored terrorism, including censorship, violence, mass arrests, and coordinated raids on homes and media offices, as well as disbanding the Association of Belarusian Journalists (BAJ) … between 500 and 600 journalists have been forced into exile, and most of those who have stayed back work clandestinely. Targeted by the police, they are arrested, searched, sometimes assaulted, and mistreated in prison.’
The CIoJ calls on all governments and states unjustly detaining journalists for doing their professional work to respect freedom of expression, the right to liberty and free them immediately. See: https://rsf.org/en/new-record-number-journalists-jailed-worldwide
