Review of UK national newspapers for Tuesday 3rd March 2026
Good morning.
Here is a round-up of eleven of today’s UK national newspaper front pages, reflecting the breadth of coverage and tone across the press.
The dominant story remains the escalating conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel — and the growing diplomatic rift between Washington and London.
The Daily Telegraph leads with a stark personal headline: “I am very disappointed in Keir”, reporting President Trump’s rebuke of the Prime Minister over the timing of UK support. The paper says the US President believes Britain took “far too long” to allow the use of UK bases.
Similarly, the Daily Express splashes: “TRUMP IS ‘VERY DISAPPOINTED’ IN SIR KEIR OVER IRAN HELP”, describing criticism from Washington over Britain’s stance in the crisis.
The Daily Mail frames the dispute in more emotive terms under the banner “IRAN WAR: DAY FOUR”, with the headline: “U.S. lambasts ‘hand-wringing, pearl-clutching’ Starmer as Kemi says he’s ‘scared’ of his own voters”, highlighting both international tension and domestic political reaction.
The Sun focuses on the Prime Minister’s decision not to retaliate following reported strikes on an RAF base, declaring: “IN ACTION THIS DAY”, alongside the line “PM won’t hit Iran back” and noting a “rift grows with US Prez”.
The Daily Mirror also leads on the regional fallout, with “MIDDLE EAST IN FLAMES” and the large headline “CHAOS & FEAR”, reporting that more than 100,000 Britons are seeking evacuation help.
The Star leads its front page with the headlines ‘Trapped Brits on the way home. It will all be over by Easter. Iran Op “ends in 5 weeks.” Pres disappointed by PM.’
Broadsheets emphasise the strategic and humanitarian implications.
The Guardian writes: “Fears grow as Iran conflict spreads across Middle East”, and reports that the Prime Minister has criticised US “regime change from the skies”, while warning of a widening regional crisis.
The Times carries the headline: “Big strike coming, says US”, saying President Trump has warned Tehran of further raids. It also highlights the Prime Minister’s rebuke of what it describes as a lack of US planning.
The Financial Times turns to economic consequences, leading with: “Iran turns fire on global energy supply”, reporting gas price surges and disruption following drone attacks and refinery closures.
The i newspaper sums up the diplomatic clash with: “Starmer and Trump clash on Ayatollah’s assassination and war with Iran”, outlining disagreements over strategy and concerns about escalation.
And the Independent leads on President Trump’s warning of further escalation with: “Trump warns ‘big wave’ yet to come in US war on Iran”, reporting market instability and missile exchanges across the region.
Across the papers, there is a shared focus on three themes: the deepening military confrontation, the diplomatic strain between the UK and US, and the potential economic and humanitarian fallout — including stranded Britons and energy market volatility.
That is a snapshot of today’s front pages.
Review of front pages of UK’s regional England, and nation Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland newspapers
Good morning.
Here is a further look at ten front pages from across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, reflecting a mix of international developments and strong regional stories.
The Metro leads with dramatic language on the escalating conflict in the Middle East. Its headline reads: “Operation epic chaos”, under the banner “WORLD REELS FROM TRUMP’S WAR ON IRAN”. The paper reports oil and gas prices rising, US jets downed in “friendly fire”, and renewed tensions between Washington and its allies.
In Scotland, both The Scotsman and The Herald carry the same prominent campaign message across their front pages: “BEHIND EVERY DYING PERSON” followed by “IS A NATION BELIEVING IN CHOICE.” The branding from Dignity in Dying Scotland signals a focus on the assisted dying debate north of the border.
Also in Scotland, the Daily Record leads on a major crime story linked to the Middle East with the bold headline: “GANGLAND KINGPINS BUSTED IN BAHRAIN”, reporting that two alleged crime bosses are set to return to the UK to face justice. The paper also notes that the “PM HITS BACK IN TRUMP WAR ROW”, reflecting the ongoing diplomatic tensions.
In Northern Ireland, the Belfast Telegraph highlights the economic impact of the international crisis, with: “Major NI fuel retailer hikes diesel price by 7% amid war in Middle East”, saying consumers are feeling the pinch. Alongside it is a separate court report concerning a drink-driving case.
The Irish News also leads with concern about rising energy costs, urging calm with the headline: “Consumers are urged not to ‘panic buy’ as oil prices soar”, as it reports escalating tensions affecting global markets.
In England’s regional press, the Yorkshire Post focuses on defence and diplomacy, with: “PM defends UK bases decision”, reporting that British facilities can be used to target missile launchers and that a military site in Cyprus was hit by a suspected Iranian drone.
The Manchester Evening News turns to a local landmark, with: “Final curtain falls on the Embassy Club”, reporting that the well-known venue is set to be demolished and replaced by a health facility.
In Wales, the Western Mail leads with a political focus under the headline: “LAST STAND”, reporting that First Minister Eluned Morgan has unveiled pledges ahead of what the paper describes as Welsh Labour’s toughest battle.
The South Wales Echo concentrates on healthcare, with the headline: “HOSPITAL COVER-UP AFTER BABY DEATH”, reporting that a mother has uncovered what is described as a bid to hide failings after a stillbirth ordeal.
Across these front pages, three clear themes emerge: the international repercussions of conflict in the Middle East, particularly on energy prices; the political and defence implications for the UK; and strong domestic stories — from healthcare and crime to local identity and the assisted dying debate.
The two UK’s left-wing newspapers The National in Scotland and The Morning Star published in London both cover the Middle East conflict on their front pages. The Morning Star runs the headline: “‘Devastating“- Carnage spreads as onslaught on Iran continues.’ The National‘s headline is: ‘”Catastrophic Mistake” from Starmer‘ with the standfirst saying ‘Prime Minister slated for letting US use UK bases for strikes on Iran missile sites. Swinney says US and Israel are breaking international law.’
That is a snapshot of today’s regional front pages across the UK.
