Review of UK national newspapers for Wednesday 4th March 2026
Many of Wednesday’s newspapers are dominated by the deepening Middle East conflict and its political and economic consequences, with several also focusing on Donald Trump’s criticism of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the deployment of a Royal Navy warship to the region.
Middle East conflict dominates
Several papers lead on the escalating war between Israel and Iran and the widening regional impact.
The Guardian reports that “US and Israel intensify Iran attacks as conflict widens”, describing a growing campaign of strikes and rising casualties as international concern grows about the potential for a broader regional war.
The Financial Times focuses on the economic consequences, with the headline “Mideast energy shock batters markets.” The paper says the conflict is pushing up oil prices and unsettling global markets, warning the turmoil could ripple through sovereign debt and economic growth.
Similarly, The Times warns of the domestic implications, leading with “PM is no Churchill, says Trump as tensions rise.” Alongside the diplomatic row, it highlights a “significant fallout from conflict for UK economy,” with concerns about higher energy bills and inflation.
The i newspaper also stresses the widening crisis, reporting “War spreads across Middle East as Trump rages at Starmer.” It says Britain has deployed the destroyer HMS Dragon to Cyprus following an attack on RAF Akrotiri, as Western governments respond to rising regional instability.
Trump–Starmer row dominates several front pages
A number of papers focus on Donald Trump’s criticism of Keir Starmer, particularly his claim that the prime minister is “no Churchill.”
The Daily Telegraph leads with “Starmer is no Churchill,” reporting that the US president criticised Britain’s reluctance to support strikes on Iran.
The Independent carries a similar line with “Starmer’s ‘no Churchill’ says Trump as warship is deployed to Cyprus.”
The Daily Mail echoes the theme prominently, declaring “A prime minister who Trump mocks as ‘no Churchill’ and a Navy fleet stranded in port.” The paper’s commentary criticises the government’s handling of defence readiness.
Tabloids also highlight the political dispute.
The Sun front page reads “IRAN WAR: SCRAMBLE TO CYPRUS” alongside the headline “SHIP HAPPENS,” referring to the deployment of a Royal Navy destroyer.
And the Daily Mirror emphasises the military move with “UK WARSHIP TO MIDDLE EAST” and the dramatic headline “ENTER THE DRAGON.” The paper reports that ministers say the deployment is defensive but notes concerns about escalation.
The Star highlights the domestic dimension of the Middle-East crisis with the headline: “Panic At The Pumps– Forecourts chaos as war sees fuel prices surge.’
Domestic economic pressures
Away from the conflict, some newspapers highlight domestic financial concerns.
The Daily Express leads with “1 MILLION MORE WILL PAY TAX ON STATE PENSIONS,” reporting that changes to thresholds could bring many pensioners into the income tax system.
The i newspaper also highlights taxation pressures, saying “UK to hit historic high tax burden.”
Meanwhile the Financial Times warns that the war could deepen economic strain, including higher energy prices and further pressure on inflation.
Summary:
Across Wednesday’s front pages the dominant story is the widening Middle East conflict, with newspapers examining its military escalation, economic impact and political fallout. Many titles also highlight Donald Trump’s criticism of Keir Starmer and the UK’s decision to deploy a naval vessel to the region, while others focus on taxation and the potential financial consequences of the crisis.
Review of front pages of UK’s regional England, and nation Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland newspapers
Turning to the regional front pages from across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, many lead with international tensions and political reaction, while others focus on crime, courts and local community stories.
Trump criticism and Middle East tensions
Several papers highlight the political fallout from the growing Middle East crisis and comments made by Donald Trump about the British prime minister.
The Yorkshire Post leads with “UK to beef up Cyprus security as Trump rounds on Starmer again.”
The paper reports that Britain is strengthening defences around the RAF base on the island and says the US president has repeated his criticism that Sir Keir Starmer is “not Winston Churchill.”
A similar theme appears on the Scotsman, which reports “Iran war: Trump says Starmer is ‘no Churchill’ in new blast.”
The paper says the remarks came amid escalating tensions in the region and renewed debate over Britain’s role in military operations.
The Belfast Telegraph also highlights the diplomatic dispute, carrying the headline “‘He’s no Churchill’: Trump aims dig at Starmer over Iran strikes.”
Meanwhile The Herald focuses on domestic political reaction to the economic impact of the crisis, with “Defiant Reeves shrugs off downgrade in Tory attack.”
It reports that Chancellor Rachel Reeves has faced criticism over revised growth forecasts but insists the government’s economic strategy remains on course.
Crime and court stories dominate some regional titles
Several regional newspapers focus on serious criminal cases.
The Manchester Evening News leads with “Three boys accused of raping girl.”
The paper reports that a court heard the trio were aged 12, 13 and 14 at the time of the alleged attack.
In Wales, the South Wales Echo headline reads “Champion horse trainer ‘beat dog walker’.”
It says a court has heard allegations that trainer Evan Williams broke a pensioner’s arm during an incident.
The same story also appears prominently on the front of the Western Mail, which leads with “Top horse trainer ‘beat dog walker’.”
In Scotland, the Daily Record carries a stark headline about a convicted killer’s release, declaring “DOUBLE KILLER IS BACK ON THE STREETS.”
The paper says the early release of the prisoner has caused “shock and disgust.”
Community and human stories
Other regional papers highlight community-focused reporting.
The Irish News leads with “‘She’s looking down’ – Chloe’s legacy lives on in good deeds.”
The paper reports on fundraising efforts in memory of a Belfast woman whose work continues to support communities in South Africa.
Meanwhile the Metro front page carries the headline “Trump: Too late to talk,” reporting claims that negotiations with Iran are no longer possible after escalating strikes in the region.
The left-wing titles
The National in Scotland reports: ‘Clarity demand over US military flights. Assurance sought from the UK Government that no aircraft making a stopover in Scotland has been involved in US-Israeli offensive in the Middle East.’
The Communist Morning Star presents the side profiles of US President Donald Trump and UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer looking at each other with the headline: ‘Ditch Trump.’
Summary
Across the regional front pages, several newspapers focus on the international crisis and Donald Trump’s criticism of the UK prime minister, while others highlight major criminal cases, court proceedings and local community stories affecting readers across the UK and Ireland.
