Review of UK national newspapers for Thursday 5th March 2026
Thursday’s Newspaper Front Pages
Many of Thursday’s papers focus on the escalation of the conflict between the United States and Iran, after a reported submarine strike on an Iranian warship. Several titles also give prominent coverage to a developing espionage investigation involving the husband of a Labour MP, while others highlight political criticism of the government and a sports controversy involving England footballer Harry Maguire.
War escalation dominates many front pages
A number of papers lead on the reported sinking of an Iranian naval vessel.
The Guardian headline reads “At least 87 dead as US sinks Iranian ship near Sri Lanka.”
The paper reports that a torpedo fired from a US submarine struck the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena in the Indian Ocean, raising questions about the legality of Washington’s expanding military campaign.
The Financial Times also focuses on the widening conflict, declaring “US broadens war on Iran to high seas.”
It says the submarine strike represents the first sinking of an enemy ship since the Second World War and warns of the risk of a broader regional escalation.
The Independent takes a similar line with “War spreads across world as US says: We have only just begun.”
The paper says the conflict has moved beyond the Middle East as NATO responds to missile activity and Western governments consider evacuation plans.
Meanwhile the i newspaper headline reads “Warzone widens as US sub torpedoes warship off Sri Lanka.”
It reports that the attack marks a major expansion of the conflict into the Indian Ocean.
Tabloids also feature the story prominently.
The Daily Mirror front page says “Blown out the water” alongside the line “US submarine torpedoes and sinks Iranian warship.”
And the Daily Mail carries the headline “Trump sub torpedoes Iranian warship,” under the banner “New Iran war flashpoint.”
China spying investigation
Another story appearing across several front pages concerns an investigation into alleged espionage linked to China.
The Times reports “Labour MP’s husband is held on suspicion of spying for China.”
It says three men connected to the Labour Party have been arrested as part of a national security inquiry.
The Daily Mail gives the story prominent billing as well, with “Labour ensnared in China spy probe.”
The Daily Mirror also focuses on the case with “China ‘spy’ inquiry” and the quote “MP: I’ve never suspected my husband.”
The Star‘s headline is in the tradition of tabloid punning- “The ‘Spy’ Who Loved Me” explaining: ‘Partners of 2 Labour politicians are suspected Chinese agents’ and ‘Joani Reid’s shock as cops quiz her husband’
And the i newspaper carries the line “Labour MP: my husband’s China spying arrest is nothing to do with me.”
Political criticism and government tensions
Some papers concentrate on political reaction in Westminster.
The Daily Telegraph leads with “Miliband led revolt to Trump’s Iran war.”
The paper reports that cabinet disagreements emerged over whether Britain should allow the United States to use UK bases during the conflict.
The Daily Express carries the headline “WEAK, WEAK, WEAK!”
It reports that Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has accused the prime minister of being weak on national security and foreign policy.
Football controversy
Away from politics and conflict, The Sun focuses on a football story involving England defender Harry Maguire.
Its headline reads “Greek cops wanted £50k Maguire ‘bribe’.”
The paper says the player refused to pay money allegedly demanded by police during an earlier legal dispute and is now seeking to clear his name.
Summary
Across Thursday’s national front pages, the dominant story is the widening US-Iran conflict following a submarine strike on an Iranian warship, with many newspapers warning the war could spread beyond the Middle East.
Several papers also highlight a developing investigation into alleged Chinese espionage involving figures linked to the Labour Party, while others focus on domestic political criticism and a high-profile football controversy.
