Review of UK national newspapers for Tuesday 21st April 2026

Tuesday’s Front Pages – At a Glance

Many of today’s papers are dominated by the same political story: the fallout over the vetting of Peter Mandelson and the pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Broadheets Lead on Political Fallout

The The Guardian reports
“Starmer on collision course with Robbins over Mandelson vetting”,**
focusing on tensions between the Prime Minister and senior civil servants, with a sacked official expected to give his account.

Similarly, the Financial Times leads with
“Starmer claims officials deliberately kept him in the dark over Mandelson”,**
highlighting accusations of scapegoating alongside unease among Labour MPs.

The The Times takes a stronger line, saying
“PM ‘forced Foreign Office to approve Mandelson job’”,**
reporting claims that Starmer pushed the appointment despite vetting concerns.

While the The Daily Telegraph quotes the Prime Minister directly:
“I know many MPs will find these facts to be incredible”,**
reflecting his defence in the Commons.

Mid-Market and Tabloids Turn Up the Pressure

The Daily Mail headline reads
“IT’S EVERYONE’S FAULT BUT HIS”,**
accusing the Prime Minister of shifting blame despite admitting he was wrong to appoint Mandelson.

The Daily Mirror frames the row as
“THEY CHOSE NOT TO TELL ME”,**
emphasising Starmer’s claim that officials withheld key information.

The Daily Express is more blunt, declaring
“FOR ONCE YOU ARE ACTUALLY RIGHT PM… IT BEGGARS BELIEF!”,**
echoing criticism from opposition benches.

And the The Independent says
“Proof you knew is Indy’s front page, Badenoch tells PM”,**
pointing to claims the issue had already been publicly reported.

Meanwhile, The i sums up the Prime Minister’s position with
“Starmer: I know my story sounds ‘incredible’”,**
while noting a “bruising Commons encounter.”

And the Sun headlines: “A Sorry Excuse.. D’Oh! Keir: I didn’t know I was fibbing.

Royal Coverage Provides Contrast

Away from politics, several papers lead or trail with tributes marking what would have been the 100th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II.

The The Sun front page features
“Mama’s legacy of hope in troubled times”,**
with King Charles III reflecting on his mother’s influence.

The Daily Mirror carries a similar tone:
“These times would have troubled her … but she believed in a brighter dawn.”

And the Daily Express leads its top banner with
“King’s ‘she meant so much to us all’ tribute.”

Other Stories in Brief

  • The Guardian highlights “The rise of AI job scams” with the warning: “You’re not hired.”
  • Several papers, including The Times, report plans to ban mobile phones in schools.
  • The Financial Times also notes executive pay, with “FTSE bosses get 18% pay bump”.

Summary

In summary, today’s front pages are overwhelmingly focused on a single political controversy: who knew what—and when—about the Mandelson vetting.

The broadsheets emphasise process and accountability, while the tabloids sharpen the tone, questioning the Prime Minister’s credibility. Alongside this, many titles strike a reflective note with tributes to Queen Elizabeth II.

Review of front pages of UK’s regional England, and nation Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland newspapers

Good morning. Here’s a look at the front pages across the UK this Tuesday.”

We begin with Metro, which leads with political pressure on the Prime Minister under the headline: “PM IN ‘COVER-UP’ CLAIM AS HE FIGHTS FOR JOB.” The paper questions credibility in its bold splash, “Incredible? Yes, prime minister,” reflecting ongoing controversy around vetting decisions and calls for resignation.

A similar theme runs through several titles. The Herald reports “MPs to hold emergency debate on Mandelson,” while its main headline focuses on energy policy, “Electricity grid prices ‘hitting renewable funding’.” The paper highlights tensions between infrastructure costs and green investment.

In England, The Yorkshire Post leads with environmental and economic concerns: “Fears of return to fracking to allow for Bitcoin ‘mining’.” Alongside that, there’s a royal story, “King pays tribute to ‘darling Mama’,” marking a personal reflection from the monarch.

Turning to Northern Ireland, The Belfast Telegraph front page features a human-interest lead: “‘Mel loved it here’: Tragic TV star’s husband tells of how she took NI to her heart.” Beneath that, the paper reports on governance issues with “Ex-police watchdog ‘appointed despite security concerns’,” again tying into the wider vetting debate.

The Daily Record in Scotland takes a more hard-hitting approach, leading with “TEENAGE SOLDIER’S SQUADDIE SEX ABUSE ORDEAL,” describing allegations of serious misconduct within the armed forces.

Also in Northern Ireland, The Irish News highlights community and policing issues with “PSNI in talks with supplier over ‘stolen’ bonfire pallets,” while noting that “Almost half of teachers considering quitting due to burnout.”

In Wales, the Western Mail leads on a court case: “Driver guilty of killing ex-Wales manager in crash,” reporting on a high-profile conviction. Meanwhile, the South Wales Echo takes a more emotive angle with “‘THIEVES LEFT DOG TO DIE ON RAILWAY TRACK’,” focusing on a case of animal cruelty.

From Manchester, the Manchester Evening News front page reports a major investigation with “FLATS MURDER PROBE,” as residents describe a “loud bang” before a police operation.

Back in Scotland, The Scotsman warns of policy risks with “Miliband is warned of ‘untold damage’ in clean energy drive,” raising concerns about the impact of net-zero strategies, while also noting “Starmer to face more scrutiny over Mandelson.”

And on the front page of The National the headline is: “Why Didn’t You Ask?”- explaining: “Starmer still insists he won’t resign as MPS press him over Mandelson security vetting in heated Commons debate.”

And in London the left-wing The Morning Star (for peace and socialism) reports on its front page: “Starmer on Brink- PM says others are to blame for Mandleson scandal but lame excuse fails to convince.”

“So, a mixed picture across the papers today — with politics and scrutiny of government appointments dominating nationally, alongside strong regional coverage of crime, courts, and community concerns.”

“That’s your newspaper review.”

The Institute calls on Belarus to release the journalists and media workers it has detained. Belarus is currently ranked 167th out of 180 countries in the World Press Freedom Index. See: https://rsf.org/en/country/belarus RSF states: ‘To silence independent journalists, the authorities have resorted to state-sponsored terrorism, including censorship, violence, mass arrests, and coordinated raids on homes and media offices, as well as disbanding the Association of Belarusian Journalists (BAJ).’

The CIoJ calls on all governments and states unjustly detaining journalists for doing their professional work to respect freedom of expression, the right to liberty and free them immediately. See: https://rsf.org/en/new-record-number-journalists-jailed-worldwide
