Review of UK national newspapers for Wednesday 22nd April 2026
Starting with politics, which dominates much of the front pages this morning.
Several papers lead on mounting pressure around the government’s handling of the Peter Mandelson appointment.
The Financial Times reports:
“Robbins tells of No 10 pressure to approve role for Mandelson”,
highlighting claims that Downing Street pushed for the appointment “under duress”.
A similar line is taken by The Guardian, which leads with:
“Robbins accuses No 10 of applying huge pressure over Mandelson job”,
focusing on allegations of a “dismissive” attitude to the vetting process.
The i says:
“Wounded Starmer given public dressing down by his Cabinet”,
suggesting the political fallout is now extending داخل government ranks.
Meanwhile, The Times strikes a slightly different tone, with:
“Starmer on the ropes over Mandelson vetting fiasco”,
reporting that cabinet allies are turning on the Prime Minister amid claims he “bullied” officials.
The Daily Telegraph is more direct, leading with:
“Labour MPs vent fury at ‘toxic’ No10”,
framing the story as a broader internal backlash.
The tabloid press takes a stronger, more emotive stance on the same story.
The Daily Mail headline reads:
“Starmer’s support starts to crack”,
describing a cabinet under pressure as divisions emerge.
The Daily Mirror goes with:
“MANDELSON VETTING CRISIS”,
and adds that the Prime Minister faces “yet more fallout”.
The Sun uses its characteristically punchy style:
“Just say ‘Yes, Prime Minister’”,
claiming No10 ordered officials to approve the appointment.
And The Daily Express focuses elsewhere, leading on a campaign story:
“HERO MANAGER SEAN MUST GET HIS JOB BACK!”,
calling for a supermarket worker to be reinstated after confronting a shoplifter.
The Independent also leads on the political row, but with sharper language:
“No 10 secretly sought ambassador role for disgraced Starmer ally”,
reporting claims of pressure to secure a diplomatic position.
Away from Westminster, there are international developments making the front pages.
The Times reports:
“Trump extends ceasefire with Iran after collapse of peace talks”,
pointing to continuing instability in the region.
The Guardian also carries this story prominently:
“Race to get US and Iran in new ceasefire talks”,
highlighting diplomatic efforts to avoid further escalation.
And finally, a mix of lighter and human-interest stories appears across the papers.
The Daily Mail features a lifestyle headline:
“I thought I’d quit my Botox addiction…”,
while The Telegraph and The Times both carry images marking the late Queen’s centenary, with the Princess of Wales meeting veterans.
In summary:
A strong consensus across the papers this morning, with the Mandelson vetting row dominating coverage—though interpreted through different editorial lenses—while international tensions and a handful of domestic campaigns and features complete the picture.
Review of front pages of UK’s regional England, and nation Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland newspapers
We begin with politics, which again features prominently across several front pages.
The Metro leads with:
“Peers pressure”,
reporting that the Prime Minister is “reeling” after fresh claims about pressure surrounding ambassadorial appointments.
In Scotland, The Scotsman carries:
“SNP and Tories unite in call on Labour MPs to topple Starmer”,
suggesting an unusual political alignment and calls for a vote of confidence.
Meanwhile, the Daily Record takes a more dramatic tone with:
“PM’S A SPENT FORCE”,
saying the Prime Minister faces growing calls to quit following the Mandelson controversy.
And The Herald reports:
“Leak probe to look into Mandelson vetting row”,
indicating the issue continues to deepen with further scrutiny.
Elsewhere, domestic policy and public services are high on the agenda.
The Yorkshire Post leads with:
“Crumbling hospital ‘still at serious risk of deterioration’”,
with warnings that delays in rebuilding could threaten patient safety.
In Northern Ireland, The Irish News reports:
“North’s digital health record system £100m over budget”,
highlighting significant cost overruns in a major public project.
Turning to Wales, where politics and local issues share the spotlight.
The Western Mail says:
“Plaid and Reform ‘neck-and-neck’”,
pointing to a closely contested political race.
While the South Wales Echo leads with a sports-related story:
“Cardiff City hit with £15K FA fine”,
after sanctions over a homophobic chant.
In Northern Ireland, the Belfast Telegraph focuses on both politics and community.
Its main headline reads:
“Paisley backing Reform in GB council elections”,
while also carrying a striking human-interest story:
“You’re not alone… Strangers turn up for funeral of woman with no known relatives”.
Regional English papers highlight local news and human stories.
The Manchester Evening News leads with:
“SCHOOL HEAD DIES IN CRASH”,
describing tributes to a “loving dad” and respected headteacher.
In the left-wing papers the focus is on criticising Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.
The Morning Star (for peace and socialism) headlines with: “Probe Labour Together Now- fresh pressure on Starmer as Robbins gives damning evidence.”
The National in Scotland (The newspaper that supports an independent Scotland) runs a quotation headline: “‘He is weak, desperate and fighting to save his career’- Swinney tells Starmer that he should resign.”
And finally, a mix of lighter and reflective stories also appears.
The Yorkshire Post front page features a royal image marking a historic milestone with:
“Elizabeth honoured for 100th landmark”,
while the Irish News carries a poignant family story about grief and remembrance.
In summary:
While the Mandelson row continues to dominate parts of the UK press, regional papers broaden the picture—highlighting public service concerns, local tragedies, political contests, and community stories across all four nations.

The Institute calls on Belarus to release the journalists and media workers it has detained. Belarus is currently ranked 167th out of 180 countries in the World Press Freedom Index. See: https://rsf.org/en/country/belarus RSF states: ‘To silence independent journalists, the authorities have resorted to state-sponsored terrorism, including censorship, violence, mass arrests, and coordinated raids on homes and media offices, as well as disbanding the Association of Belarusian Journalists (BAJ).’
The CIoJ calls on all governments and states unjustly detaining journalists for doing their professional work to respect freedom of expression, the right to liberty and free them immediately. See: https://rsf.org/en/new-record-number-journalists-jailed-worldwide
